And of course, won’t surprise you, probably. Now, the snarkiness of my New York City-born-and-bred therapist who’s probably roughly the same age as Smith not withstanding (she’s great, really!), I realized something when I told her this story that I hadn’t fully understood until that point. I think I got a copy of Horses a few weeks later. And, more importantly, it prompted me to seek out Patti Smith’s music and informed my understanding of Bruce Springsteen’s early work. Oddly (but ultimately not surprisingly), many people I spoke to about this project during the course of this week pretty much only remember 10,000 Maniacs for this one song. I can tell because the liner notes and jewel case are practically pristine. I also have the CD, which, again, I must have scraped together some good report card money to buy on the release date, but I hardly listened to it. Doubtless, I was glued to the TV, but I seriously have no memory of my impressions as it aired. Here’s the weird thing about revisiting the band’s appearance on “Unplugged”: I don’t actually remember watching it. Of course, it goes without saying that this is my biggest piece of evidence that the only way the 10,000 Maniacs were able to muddle through their episode of “Unplugged” was to knock a few brilliant covers out of the park, so to speak. 10,000 Maniacs – Because The Night (MTV Unplugged, 1993)
